Keep Your Nervous System Running Smoothly

person with illustration of spine over their backIf you were only able to have one car for your entire life, how would you take care of it? Better yet, you’re hoping your 16-year-old self has enough wisdom to pick out the correct one. Taking care of our car is in many ways, like taking care of ourselves. Vehicles have so many items that need to be maintained, balanced, cleaned—and continued success usually leads to a well-running machine.

The Most Important System in the Body

Let’s talk about how chiropractic is an important part of maintenance. First off, the spine houses the nervous system, which is the most important system in the body. Read that again: the nervous system is the most important system in the body. Almost every action, digestion, production, and reaction starts with the nervous system. This system is made up of the brain, spinal cord and nerves that travel across the human body.

One of the easiest ways to maintain the nervous system is through chiropractic care. Keeping the spine freely movable and adaptable allows the nervous system to do its job without you even knowing it. It’s like when apps on your phone or software on your computer automatically run in the background. You’re not in control of it, but you’re glad it’s working.

The Importance of Maintenance Care

The maintenance stage of care is when we make a long-term partnership to keep your spine from breaking down too soon or having specific areas more worn than others. We do this with a timed adjustment before stress builds up to cause issues. This is the best chance to age gracefully, and hopefully to use our spine effectively into our later years of life.

One of my most difficult moments as a doctor is telling patients I can’t help them, or our chance of success is low. Every time this happens, it’s because the patient learned too late about what chiropractic can do.

When we find that balancing our tires on our vehicle is important to prevent uneven wear at the tire shop, it’s an easy fix. We just get a new set of tires and complain about the price! Then we try to find the silver lining with roadside assistance or free balancing for the life of the tire. This doesn’t apply to the human body—and as far as I know, we can’t get a new spine. So please stay maintained, and I hope we all age gracefully and are active for as long as possible.
